3. Region/country-based shipping rates

This setting applies additional shipping charges for specific regions such as remote islands or specific countries.

Use this setting when:

  • Carrier contracts include regional surcharges
  • International shipping requires additional charges such as fuel surcharges or air freight fees

This guide explains how to set different shipping rates by region/country. Using Japan as an example, Hokkaido (北海道) is typically considered a remote area that incurs additional shipping charges. The example below shows how to set up separate rates for standard areas (excluding remote regions) and remote/special regions.

Step 1. Set up standard shipping rates for standard regions (excluding remote areas)

First, set the shipping rate to $5 for regions in Japan excluding Hokkaido (北海道).

  1. Go to Settings>Orders/Shipping>Shipping.
  2. Click Manage under Default shipping profile.
  3. Click Add shipping zone.
  4. In Available shipping zone, select regions in Japan excluding Hokkaido (北海道).
  5. Enter the shipping rate ($5) in the Shipping rate field.
  6. Click Save to close the Set available shipping zone window.
  7. Click Save at the bottom of the Default shipping profile page.

Step 2. Set up additional shipping rates for remote/special regions

Hokkaido (北海道) is a remote region, so set the shipping rate to $10 to account for additional delivery charges.

  1. Click Add shipping zone.
  2. In Available shipping zone, select only Hokkaido (北海道).
  3. Enter the shipping rate ($10) in the Shipping rate field.
  4. Click Save to close the Set available shipping zone window.
  5. Click Save at the bottom.

4. Weight-based shipping rates for international orders

Set variable international shipping rates that are automatically calculated using country-specific rate tables based on actual or volumetric weight ranges.

Use this setting when:

  • Product sizes and weights vary significantly (mix of light and heavy products)
  • Carrier contracts use rates based on weight ranges such as 0–0.5kg, 0.5–1kg, etc. or volumetric weight

This guide explains how to set up weight-based shipping rates for international shipping, where rates are automatically calculated based on country-specific rate tables. For example, when shipping from Japan to the U.S., you will create weight ranges (e.g., 0–1kg, 1–3kg, etc.) for the U.S. and enter rates for each range so that they are automatically calculated during checkout.

Setup steps

  1. Go to Settings>Orders/Shipping>Shipping.
  2. Click Manage under Default shipping profile.
  3. Click Add shipping zone.
  4. In the Set available shipping zone window, enter the shipping rate name that you will see in the admin in the Name field (e.g., Weight-based shipping).
  5. Select the countries or regions you want to ship to in Available shipping zone (e.g., U.S.A).
  6. In the Name field under the Apply custom shipping rate rule section, enter the shipping rate name that customers will see on your store's checkout page.
  7. Select Yes for Apply custom shipping rate rule.
  8. Select Weight per product and set the weight ranges.
    • Example: 0 kg to under 1 kg → Set shipping rate to $50
    • Example: 1 kg to under 3 kg → Set shipping rate to $90
  9. Click Add rate to add additional shipping rate rules.
  10. Click Save to close the Set available shipping zone window.
  11. Click Save at the bottom of the Default shipping profile page.
